Know Your Hobby!
It’s what you take pleasure doing during your free time.
It’s oftentimes referred to as "leisure pursuit" …and, sometimes, as “leisure activity”.
To some, it’s their “fad”. To other’s it’s simply a “fancy in pastime”.
But, to everyday people, almost in every corner of our world, there’s no better recognized way of calling it than “My hobby”.
In the Middle Ages, falconry --- what, might actually represent the source of origin for this term we, today, call hobby --- was a very popular spare-time recreational pursuit, and of all the different birds used for it, the Eurasian Hobby was perhaps the most popular.
An alternative explanation is that the usage grew from another recreational animal named just, hobby. This was specie of small ambling or pacing horse.
Now, what could that ‘pacing horse’ have been?
The ‘hobby-horse’ or ‘pacing-horse’ was a wooden or wickerwork toy made to be ridden just like the real hobby. So, from this, came the expression “to ride one’s hobby horse” ….. meaning: “to follow a favourite pastime” and, in turn, hobby in the modern sense of recreation.
Hobbies are practiced for interest and enjoyment, rather than financial reward. Yet, there are several collectors who have earned remarkable sums of money from their leisure time engagements.
In our present, due to the amazing assortment in lines of hobby activities one can select from, for convenience purposes, specific categories have been created to quantify and qualify the choices made by individuals.
For example, we have: COLLECTING (antiques, artwork, autographs, books, records, postcards, stamps, etc.), ARTS & CRAFTS (crochet, pottery, sewing, wood carving, drawing, Etc.), GAMES (chess, bridge, poker, dominoes, etc.), SPORTS (cricket, football, dance, fishing, hunting, sailing, etc.), LITERATURE (reading, writing, learning foreign languages) … and, many, many more.
